A Framework Built for Real Schools
Based on classroom observation, not just theory
When I started developing Snapshot, I knew I couldn't just copy the existing SEND frameworks. The SEND Code of Practice gives us the four broad areas of need, but in real schools, that's not how we actually talk about learners. I spent months watching how SENCOs, teachers, and support staff actually describe students.
The eight domains came from three places: real classroom language, the SEND Code of Practice, and what actually matters for transitions. The first four map to the Code of Practice, but I added four more I kept hearing: Health, Life Skills, Community Access, and Regulation.
I wanted a strengths-based approach. Instead of "cannot communicate," it's "can communicate with familiar people, needs support with complex communication." The domains cover every aspect of school and life — what teachers, parents, and employers all care about.
For student placement, the eight domains answer the critical questions: Can they manage the sensory environment? Handle social demands? Do they have the life skills for this setting? Each domain is scored A-E in positive language, helping teachers see potential, not just problems.
When learners move settings, those eight domains give the receiving team a complete picture in minutes, not weeks. That's why I built it this way — to see the whole person, not just the SEND label.
Understanding Support Levels
A–E describes the level of support a pupil needs — not their ability or diagnosis. A is minimal support, E is intensive support.
Minimal
Needs are well-managed within universal provision. No targeted intervention or additional adult support routinely required.
Low
Some targeted support needed at key points. Largely self-managing with the right prompts and structure.
Moderate
Regular planned support required throughout the day. Consistent strategies needed from every adult.
High
Significant adult involvement needed across most of the day. Careful planning and consistent staffing essential.
Intensive
Very high levels of support needed across most areas. Requires individualized provision and significant adult support.
Why Eight Domains Matter
A comprehensive approach ensures no aspect of pupil need is overlooked
Complete Picture
Eight domains provide a holistic view of pupil needs, ensuring comprehensive support planning that addresses all aspects of their development and learning.
Consistent Understanding
Standardized domains ensure all staff members have the same understanding of pupil needs, creating consistent support across different settings and situations.
Progress Tracking
Regular assessment across all domains helps track progress over time, identify changing needs, and adjust support strategies accordingly.
